This is a guide to help you prepare for a yacht delivery. Whether you are a yacht owner, professional skipper or yacht delivery crew member, this guide is designed to help you.

Delivering a yacht to a new destination can be an exciting adventure, but it requires careful preparation to ensure a safe and successful journey.

Here are some steps you can take to prepare your yacht for delivery:

    • Inspect the yacht: Before departing, inspect the yacht thoroughly to make sure it’s in good condition. Check for any leaks, cracks, or damage to the hull, rigging, sails, and other critical components.
    • Check the engine: Check that the engine is in good working order and has been recently serviced. Change the oil and filters if necessary, and check the fuel and water filters. Top up the fuel and water tanks as needed. Consider inspecting a cleaning the fuel tanks and fuel lines if the yacht has been stationary for a substantial period of time, especially in hotter climates.
    • Check the navigation equipment: Ensure that all navigation equipment is functioning properly. Check the GPS, radar, depth sounder, and autopilot, and update your charts.
    • Review safety equipment: Check all safety equipment to ensure it’s in good working order. This includes life rafts, life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, and other emergency equipment.

    • Stock up on supplies: Make sure you have enough food, water, and supplies for the entire trip. This includes non-perishable food, water, snacks, sunscreen, hats, and extra clothing.
    • Obtain necessary documents: Make sure you have all necessary documents, including registration papers, proof of insurance, and any relevant visas or permits.
    • Update communications equipment: Ensure that all communication equipment is working correctly. Check the VHF radio, satellite phone, and other communication devices. Update the software on systems.
    • Plan the route: Plan the route you’ll be taking, including stops along the way for fuel, supplies, and rest. Make sure to take into account tides, currents, weather, shipping lanes, restricted areas, and potential hazards.
    • Weather: Keep a close eye on weather conditions and prevailing systems and be prepared to change plans if necessary. Ensure you have a plan for finding suitable shelter in case of severe weather.

    • Check with the hull insurer. Certain sea areas and times of year may not be covered by your insurer or underwriter.  Make sure you have sufficient cover for the passage you intend to undertake.
    • Crew: You should have a crew with you, depending on the size of your yacht and the complexity of the journey. Make sure that each member of the crew knows their responsibilities and has the necessary skills and experience to handle the yacht. Conduct safety drills such as Man Overboard practice early on in the passage.
