02 Feb Top tips for travelling on a budget
At Halcyon Yachts we organise yacht delivery teams to travel to destinations worldwide to move yachts. Crew travel costs are normally passed onto the yacht owners at cost price. Halcyon prides itself on making sure that crew travel is as cost effective and kept as low as possible always with the customer’s wallet in mind. Over the years, we have found many websites and companies that have helped us in this practice and we thought we would share our top tips with you.
Halcyon Yachts’ top tips for travel:
1) Itinerary Planning:
When investigating how to get somewhere, our first port of call is www.rome2rio.com. This is an itinerary based website which will show you how you can get from A to B using whatever travel means are available – such as flight, bus, train, ferry, car etc anywhere in the world. It will also give you public transport timetables and estimated costs too. Sometimes our start points can be far away from public transport so finding that the only way to get there is by hire car is invaluable when trying to find the best travel solution.
Once you have found the best route and mode of transport to get to or from your destination, if it is a flight that is required we go straight to www.skyscanner.com or www.momondo.com. These are comparison websites which search all the available airlines for the best prices and deals. We also love google flights: www.google.co.uk/flights/ as you can easily search and see prices to nearby airports which is a very useful feature. If it is a long-haul flight, www.themarinetravel.co.uk are a specialist travel company for marine crew. They provide yacht delivery crew with excellent discounts on longer flights as well as increasing the baggage allowance at no extra cost so you can Take your wet weather gear, sleeping bag, wellies and lifejacket plus some clothes too!
Travelling by train in the UK requires care as it can be an expensive option especially when booking last minute. There is a great site www.splitticketing.com which calculates the cheapest way and route. If you have a journey where the route is not direct, you will usually find a saving using this website. Normally, ticket prices are based on the most expensive part of the journey and calculating the whole mileage based on that price. Split ticketing splits the journey into sections and finds the best price for each part of the journey, amalgamating all onto 1 ticket. If it’s a long journey the savings can be amazing. As we all know, train prices can be extortionate so this is a great money-saving tip.
As well as going direct to the main suppliers such as Europcar, Hertz, Avis etc, try www.hotwire.com who offer the best published prices on car rental worldwide. Also, www.kayak.co.uk have a good car rental section too.
If you are really lucky then you could save lots of money by using a car share service. www.blablacar.com are our favourite and have at times really helped our yacht delivery crew out. If someone happens to be driving the same route as you then this service is both cheap and very efficient.
There are many hotel reservation sites offering the best prices but www.trivago.com and www.hotels.com seem to be the most reliable and offer the most up to date best rates that we find. For cheaper hostel type accommodation www.hostelworld.com are great as well as www.airbnb.co.uk.
6) Travel Insurance:
We always recommend any of our yacht delivery crew to have travel insurance that covers them for sailing as well as loss of personal belongings and medical cover. For specific sailing cover, www.topsailinsurance.com are one of the market leaders.
7) Travel Advice:
For comprehensive travel information about your destination including hotels, flights, restaurants, things to do www.tripadvisor.co.uk is always a great site for gathering intelligence. Don’t forget Lonely Planet Guides www.lonelyplanet.com also can give essential and indispensable information.Halcyon Yachts Ltd is a dedicated international yacht delivery specialist with highly experienced and qualified crew.
