The name “Halcyon” comes from Greek Mythology, and was derived from Alcyon.
Alcyon was the daughter of Aeolus. Legend has it that she and her husband, Ceyx, often sacrilegiously called each other “Zeus” and “Hera”. This angered Zeus greatly, so he threw a thunderbolt at Ceyxs’ ship. Ceyx then appeared to Alcyone as an apparition to tell her of his fate. She threw herself into the sea with grief. As an act of compassion from the Gods, both Ceyx and Alcyone were turned into birds. The Mythical birds were named Halcyon Birds, in honour of Aeolus’ daughter.
The Halcyon Bird, usually identified with the kingfisher, is said to breed in a nest floating on the sea. The mythical bird has the power of charming winds and waves into calmness.
The word Halcyon conjures a feeling of peacefulness and tranquillity.
